[1/7/2025] light.

留一盞燈 by howz* -- translating to leave a light; a song about missing the one that unconditionally had your back, the one that made sure that even the darkest depths of the night were still at least dimly lit. howz sings about his late mother and missing her childhood care that he took for granted. though she left a light on to ease the discomforts of the night and manifest a peaceful slumber, the light lit wasn’t always physical -- a source of comfort in times of sadness, a calming grace after making a mistake, an ability to heal the pain of others, an outlook of approaching life with a soft glow.

film photo in the back is of my great aunt’s bedroom window in taiwan. the dim morning glow felt calmingly nostalgic, reminiscent of my grandma’s house in oakland despite being across the world. overlaid on top is another film photo of lanterns that hung above a temple's plaza in shilin, another source of light in literal and symbolic ways. mixed three typefaces to try to visually depict young vs old -- standard font for the body; brushstroke type on “你 (you)”, referring to his mother, and verbs of things she did like “留 (leave [the light on])” and “唱 (sing [lullabies])”; pixelated type on “我 (me)” and childlike nouns including “燈 (light)”, “搖籃曲 (lullaby)”, and “夢 (dream)”. included a gradient on the right side of the text to blend it into the darkness of the window, playing into how the memories are fleeting and time is passing.

blend modes were fun to play around with in this piece and was good vibes throughout the process. i feel like my style isn’t usually this dark and i don’t normally mess around with photos that much in terms of layer appearance so it was a fun exploration.

[1/8/2025] intuitions.

intro (end of the world) - live* version by ariana grande just hits so hard. from the arrangement to the vocals to the visuals, it is simply chefs kiss.

bunched up and staggered text, with the first word in each sentence making contact with a word from the last to emulate the way the words roll off her tongue; with red italics for emphasis. ++ the bones are telling (haha)

went for a darker, grainy background since she talks about “if the sun refused to shine” and “if the moon went dark”, which also conveniently kinda looks like someone hugging themself, reflective of the lyrics and reminiscent of the eternal sunshine album cover.

v fun and relatively simple one to create i enjoyed this process and formatting the words was fun :’)

[1/14/2025] what the card game said.

photo shot on film from tamsui, taiwan from the summer,, on a pleasant little morning stroll with my great aunt and grandma along the river and around the nostalgic old street area; i quite enjoyed this outing. when i got these film photos back i was really pleasantly surprised with with how the railing and fishing pole created leading lines and the fishing line vanished into the water at the center of the frame.

wanted to play with a sense of childlike-ness (is that even a word lol) by throwing it back to a classic card game of go fish, with cats that got their fish.

[1/19/2025] connections & embrace.

playing with subject cutouts, compositions, and blend modes once again :’p originally wanted to add text since embrace was one of my big themes of 2024 but didn’t like how it looked so no text lol. 4 layered pics shot on film from jan-june this year; shoutout phuket, taipei, singapore, and the berkeley hills <3
