the challenge:
"Imagine you wake up tomorrow with a superpower… but every superpower needs a toolkit to help harness its full potential."
With creativity as key throughout the process, the task was to identify a shared painpoint, invent a superpower to solve it, and design a tool/platform/system to effectively manage the superpower.

defining the problem & superpower:
After some rapid ideation and affinity mapping of problems we faced in our day-to-day and, a shared painpoint we wanted to explore was having trouble finding things, and using library storage systems to remedy that. From a cup out of many at a party table, to friends in a concert crowd, to left AirPods, our memory failing us or items simply being camoflauged into its surroundings created a location challenge.

With the power of super smell, our troubles identifying and tracking personal belongings could be a stench of the past! With the superpower, we could easily identify unique scents for people, objects, and places, and locate exactly where a scent is coming from.
However, with everything having an identifiable scent, controlling super smell guided us towards answering "how might we manage the many scents we encounter to better sniff out our stuff from a sea of sameness?"

Basing the user persona off of our own experiences, Scented Sammy is a busy, socially active college student who often misplaces her belongings while rushing between classes and club events. In creating the user persona and journey map, we realized that a practical scent management must be easy to use, customizable, and specific.

With the core needs and functions being logging a smell and being able to locata a smell, our user flow consisted of four main pages: a homepage to get an overview of collected scents and be able to filter them; a category page to explore collected scents by category; a registration card that shows the details of each scent; and a history log where scents are logged based on temporal encounter with a map to easily locate scents.

lo-fi prototyping
Lo-fi prototypes for the category, home, and registration card pages based on our crazy 8 ideation sketches and discussions below! The types of information and the amount to display on each page was a choice to consider; granularity increased as users navigated from the home to the category and card pages.

We created a design system with typography, color, and component guides to insure consistency and streamline prototyping with components.

This was my first time participating in a designathon, and it surprised me how much we could imagine and create within a short time! Overall, it was a fun (and a little stressful towards the end) experience; I got to learn new prototyping techniques from my teammantes and utilize tools I've learned in class like crazy 8 ideation and affinity mapping in the "real world". Shoutout to Christiana and Sabrina for being the best teammates!
